People suffering from severe degenerative joint disease from Osteo arthritis or Rheumatoid arthritis need to know that there are excellent, viable alternatives to joint replacement surgery. These alternatives can improve your mobility, reduce swelling and improve flexibility. The best part of these injection therapies is that there is virtually no down time and only mild to moderate discomfort after the procedure lasting approximately 2 to 7 days.
Medical Ozone
Medical Ozone injections are a two part injection containing a liquid mixture of vitamins and homeopathic antiinflammatories, tissue regenerating solutions and ozone gas. The liquid and gas are directly applied to the injured joint, ligament, tendon or disc to stimulate circulation, reduce inflammation, and improve cellular repair in the area. Average number of treatments is 4-5 over 2 months, allowing the body to heal and repair in between. Medical Ozone has the incredible ability to stimulate cellular repair by improving circulation, modulating immune response and assisting cellular mitochondrial (energy) function. The procedure is over 90% effective in reducing pain and improving mobility with our patients able to move more freely starting 1-2 weeks after the first treatment.
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
The Platelet Rich Plasma procedure takes concentrated platelets from your own blood, and injects them directly to the injured Joint, tendon or ligament. This accelerates the repair of the area by calling to the region growth hormones, enzymes and other healing cells to the area. The area to be treated will go through a healing response that will take about 1-2 weeks, during this time the area of treatment will feel mild to moderate discomfort. In 3-4 weeks after injection, the area will have improved in strength, have reduced pain and significant resilience. Platelet Rich Plasma is usually given between Medical Ozone injections for severe arthritis or significant tears to the meniscus (knee), rotator cuff (shoulder), Achilles tendinitis (ankle) or degenerated discs (Back or neck). Depending on severity of injury PRP takes 1-5 treatments over time for regenerative repairs, with most people having one treatments between Medical Ozone injections.
Prolotherapy (high concentration dextrose)
A simple yet highly effective therapy for degenerative joint disease and a viable alternative for preventing joint replacement surgeries. Injections of 18-25% dextrose is injected to the injured joint, tendon or ligament to stimulate immune response repair in the area of injection. After injection there is an inflammatory response that lasts 1-2 weeks that significantly accelerates cellular regeneration in the area. The injection is repeated on average 6 or more times depending on the severity of injury for added strength and mobility of the joint.
Are You A Suitable Candidate for Joint Replacement Alternatives?
If you are facing the possibility of Joint replacement surgery in the near future, your choices for pain relief and freedom of movement is probably greater than what you were intially advised. Injection therapy for regeneration of a joint is best for mild to moderate arthritis and inflammation but even severe arthritis or “bone on bone” joints can benefit from treatment. All treatments are meant to permanently repair the damaged joint or supporting structures thus postponing looming surgeries temporarily or indefinitely. Those with severe damage to the joint will need to consider repeat injections in approximately 18-24 months after initial completion of joint repair if underlying causes (obesity, lack of exercise or dietary issues) are not addressed adequately.
